'How to Train Your Dragon 2' Live-Action: What Fans Might Not See This Time

The live-action director is determined to make drastic changes.
The dragons will fly again — but not every character may come with them. In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, director Dean DeBlois revealed that the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is in early development, and while he's still writing the script, he's already rethinking who deserves a second life on screen.
"It’s very amorphous right now," DeBlois shared. “There are still regrets I have — having written and directed the second film — that I would love to address in the live-action version. So, we don’t necessarily have to color inside the lines."
That subtle but pointed comment has fans speculating: will some characters be left behind this time? While the first remake stayed close to the animated original in plot but reimagined its protagonists, the sequel may take more liberties — including trimming the ensemble. The dragon trapper Eret, Hiccup’s long-lost mother Valka, and even some secondary dragon riders — none of these characters are guaranteed a return. And DeBlois isn't afraid to shake things up to serve a tighter, more emotionally driven story.
With Cate Blanchett and Kit Harington still unconfirmed, and DeBlois openly revisiting what didn’t work for him the first time around, this sequel may not just be a retelling — it could be a bold rewriting.
