How to watch Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation in order? Beware the one episode numbered zero
The story is linear. The release schedule is not. Here's the map.
Mushoku Tensei is one of the few isekai where "watch order" should be a non-question. The story goes forward. Rudeus is born, Rudeus grows up, Rudeus makes choices you will have opinions about.
The problem is how it was released: two split seasons, a Blu-ray-only side episode, and a season-two premiere that Studio Bind decided to call Episode 0. Skip that one and the first real episode of season two makes no sense.
The order, in one list
- Season 1, Part 1 (January to March 2021). Rudeus's rebirth, childhood, magic lessons, Sylphie, and the disaster at the end.
- Season 1, Part 2 (October to December 2021). The Demon Continent trek with Eris and Ruijerd, the road home, and Eris walking out.
- Eris the Goblin Slayer (OVA, March 2022). A side story that slots in around episode sixteen, when the group is in Millishion. Optional, but it introduces Cliff, who matters later. Bundled with the fourth Blu-ray, so it's the one streaming viewers miss.
- Season 2, Episode 0 (July 2023). The one everyone skips. It's about where Sylphie went after the teleportation catastrophe, and it sets up her whole season-two identity. Watch it first.
- Season 2, Parts 1 and 2 (July 2023 to July 2024). Rudeus alone, then Ranoa University, then the reunion.
- Season 3 (from July 4, 2026, split-cour). Opens with a two-episode Eris training arc under the Sword God that aired the same day, then rejoins Rudeus.
Episode 0 is not a prologue you can skip. It's the first episode of season two wearing a disguise.
The Episode 0 trap, explained
Season two's numbering starts at zero because the episode is technically a side story: it follows Sylphie, not Rudeus, and picks up a thread from the middle of season one. Streaming menus sometimes shove it to the end of the season or into a "specials" folder. If you go straight to Episode 1 you'll spend twelve episodes wondering who this Fitz person is and why the show is being so coy about it.
Don't do that to yourself. Zero, then one.
The season three timeline wrinkle
Season three's opening two episodes are Eris, off training during the time skip that happened between seasons. By the time you see her grown-up in episode two, she's caught up to roughly episode eight of season two. It's the only place the show jumps around, and it only does it for two episodes. Then it's straight ahead again.
Where it's all going
The anime has now covered Rudeus from birth through university and marriage. There's a lot of novel left. Rifujin na Magonote, who wrote the whole thing, has been dealing with a fresh round of online criticism since season three launched and seems entirely unbothered. On X, per CBR, the author wrote: "I'll write the work I want to create for myself."
Studio Bind, for its part, has kept the core staff together across all three seasons, with Ryōsuke Shibuya directing this one. Season three's premiere came with two episodes at once, then went weekly.
Release order and story order are the same thing here. The only trap is a zero.
