Based on a true story, this overlooked gem will transport you into the brutal reality of the 80s crime scene.

When it comes to cinema, there's nothing that pains me more than watching an exceptional movie fade into obscurity after its release. And a movie flopping at the box office doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. On the contrary, it can be one of the most engaging and fun experiences you can ever have.

The Order (2024) is one of those overlooked gems. The movie grossed only $2.3 million worldwide. That can be attributed to its limited theatrical release, which I personally think was a mistake as The Order surely deserved a much bigger stage.

The Order Is Based On a Horrifying True Story

The Order follows Terry (Jude Law), an FBI agent who pursuits what appears to be a series of standard bank robberies. He soon finds out that these robberies are actually connected to a dangerous white supremacist group.

Nicholas Hoult plays Bob Mathews, the leader of the group. His character is based on a real-life figure.

Nicholas Hoult Deserved That Oscar Nomination

If there's one thing that keeps me up at night, it's the fact that Nicholas Hoult's performance went unrecognized during the Oscar season. His portrayal was so nuanced and unsettling that fans for sure thought he would at least get nominated.

"After seeing it I had pegged Hoult as a possible nominee for the Oscars, I evidently was wrong. Still a very good, and slightly disconcerting movie," Redditor Alchemix-16 wrote.

That kind of portrayal is not easy to do. During the segment In Conversation (Rolling Stone UK) with James McAvoy, Hoult revealed what he had to do in order to get into the character. He said:

“One of the key things I think for me in playing that character was to play away from all of those elements, the bold headlines and try and understand from his perspective the love and community and things that he believes is actually his cause. From the outside you can clearly see that it’s not, but trying to understand it from a different perspective.”

What Do Fans and Critics Think of The Order?

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, The Order has 92% from critics and 89% from the audience.

  • On IMDb, The Order is rated 6.8/10.

Despite its limited theatrical release, The Order was praised by critics. Ben Kenigsberg (New York Times) wrote:

“The movie is more effective as a grim, involving cop thriller than it is as an ostensible statement on The Order’s reverberations in the present.”
