His House (2020) is one of those films. It barely got promo before release, and most people missed it — despite the fact that it has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story follows Bol and Rial, refugees from South Sudan, who are placed in a worn-down house in England under strict government supervision. Still grieving the loss of their daughter and carrying trauma from war, they’re now also being haunted — not just emotionally, but literally — by a terrifying entity they call the Night Witch.
His House isn’t just another haunted-house story. It blends psychological horror with real-world tragedy, using its supernatural elements to explore trauma in a way that feels deeply human. It’s one of the most unsettling and original ghost stories I’ve seen in years.
Matt Smith (House of the Dragon) plays their social worker — not the lead, but a quietly important role that grounds the film.
