I Skipped 'Sonic 3' in Theatres — Here’s Where I’m Watching It Now (And a Quick Guide If You Missed It Too)

Shadow, streaming dates, and why I’m finally pressing play.
So here’s the deal: I didn’t catch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theatres. Not because I wasn’t curious — I’ve followed the franchise since the first movie — but I didn’t feel that urgent "run-to-the-cinema" pull this time.
Still, I kept hearing things. Good things. Shadow. Keanu Reeves. Box office smashing. And now I’m asking myself: "Okay but when can I actually watch it at home"?
Let’s break it down.
Release Dates — Digital, DVD, Streaming
If you’re like me and prefer your popcorn on the couch:
-
Digital (rent or buy): January 21, 2025
-
Streaming on Paramount Plus: February 18, 2025
-
DVD/Blu-ray/4K: April 15, 2025
And no, it’s not coming to Netflix. It’s a Paramount movie — so streaming is strictly on Paramount Plus (for now).
What’s It About Again?
This is the third film in the Sonic universe — and it definitely amps things up. Jeff Fowler’s back directing, Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic, and the gang’s all here: Knuckles (Idris Elba), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and yes — Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves. (That alone got me curious.)
Apparently, Shadow’s presence brings a darker, more emotional twist to the storyline, and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik is still very much in play — with one deleted scene on the home release showing him as a live-streaming villain. I have to see that.
How Much?
The digital version is already available to rent or buy (prices vary by platform, around $19.99 to own in HD). Paramount+ will stream it free-ish if you’re subscribed. And the physical edition? That’s dropping with bonus features, behind-the-scenes, and the usual SteelBook hype in April.
My Honest Take
I didn’t expect to still care about a Sonic franchise in 2025. I mean, it's based on a video game from the ’90s — how is this still going strong? But they did something right.
The tone feels like it knows its audience: fast, funny, a little chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt. Also: the addition of Keanu voicing Shadow? That’s genius casting.
And the fans? They’re showing up. The movie’s already made over $400 million worldwide, and it’s pushing the franchise toward the billion-dollar mark. That’s not just nostalgia — that’s momentum.
So yeah... I’m watching. Maybe not buying the Blu-ray (yet), but I’ll definitely hit play when it drops on Paramount plus.
