I Watch Many Cartoons, But This Teen Animated Series Is a True Drama With Perfect Character Development

None of the thousands of cartoons I watch on a weekly basis took the themes of friendship and the responsibility that comes with it as seriously as Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
While many of my friends constantly say that they can't take animated shows seriously, I really don't understand why. Sometimes shows like this deal with so much more complicated storylines and give you so much to think about that no other adult project ever could.
Of course there are cartoons that are aimed at an adult audience, even The Simpsons is not a children's show per se, but there are shows like Daria or BoJack Horseman that definitely require the viewers not to be children. They deal with the same dark themes as any movie or normal series, but the characters are not real, they are painted.
However, there are animated shows that are also aimed at teenagers or children, but when an adult watches them, we just understand that there's more to the story than what's being said, and we notice more details that shape our opinion of them. And one of the best ones I have seen recently is Disney 's Star vs. the Forces of Evil.
What Is Star vs. the Forces of Evil About?
Star vs. the Forces of Evil is an outstanding series for many reasons. The series features its main protagonist, the princess of a magical dimension called Mewni, Star Butterfly, who is sent to Earth by her family to protect them from evil. Star ends up in the household of Marco Diaz and his parents, and the two teenagers instantly become best friends.
But it seems that even on Earth, Star was not safe, because the hideous monsters, with their leader Ludo, followed her to steal her magic wand. This is where Star and Marco's never-ending adventures begin, as they fight the monsters and travel through the universes.
Everything gets complicated when Ludo is tricked by the villain named Toffee, who wants to destroy the magic. Toffee puts Star and others in extremely dangerous positions, only to be defeated after all. But that’s not the end of the story…
Why Star Butterfly Is My Hero
The show starts out as a lighthearted teen adventure where best friends fight for fun and save worlds in 10 minutes. But as the series progresses, it turns into a real drama with true friendships blossoming, with huge sacrifices, with first love and first betrayal, with the importance of family bonds. The show seems to dive into everything that's important and make sure it covers everything evenly.
This is one of the few shows where we get to see perfect character development. Star starts out as a teenage girl bored with everything, but ends up as a mature young woman whose wisdom has saved so many lives.
Marco starts out as a loser, but ends up as one of the bravest characters I have ever seen on screen. Even Tom, the prince of the dimension that is supposed to feel like hell, makes tremendous success in becoming a better person.
Thanks to Star, even the adults in the show realize how wrong they have been in so many of their decisions. Star made sure that the unequal rules were changed, the discrimination against those deemed undeserving ended, and the world became a better place for everyone.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil may seem like just a bright cartoon with a catchy intro song, but it offers you so much more than you expect.
So, would you give it a try? The series is streaming on Disney+.
