The White Lotus’ Fabian might be having his own secrets he tends to hide from Belinda, but he’s a pure sweetheart compared to Rudolf Höss who the actor portrayed in Jonathan Glazer’s 2023 war drama The Zone of Interest.

Loosely based on Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same name, the movie, also starring Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller, offers a glimpse into the private quiet life of the numerous Höss family living just a crossroad walk from a concentration camp sometime in 1943.

Alongside his wife Hedwig, Rudolf tries to make their common dream come true, raising children, having guests over the weekend and decorating the backyard garden — all the while gunshots and screaming outside of the house draw a truly horrifying picture with the smoke rising from the nearby crematorium in the background.

Things, however, shift radically when Rudolf’s promotion urges him to move to another side of the country, putting at risk his and Hedwig’s idyllic family life.

Released back in 2023, the movie quickly turned into yet another shocking revelation about one of the darkest periods of world history, joining movies like Steven Spielberg ’s Schindler's List or Roman Polanski’s The Pianist.

For Christian Friedel, the film was also a challenging milestone in the long-standing career as the actor has been long known for repeatedly turning Nazi roles down.

Having later on become one of the frontrunners at the 2024 awards season, The Zone of Interest won numerous prestigious statuettes, including two Oscars for Best International Feature and Best Sound.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently holding scores of 93% and 79% from critics and audiences respectively.
