"Indiana Jones and the Goddamn Hippies": Fifth Installment Mercilessly Trolled by Fans
New images of Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones 5 have been released, and Reddit has been flooded with jokes about Ford's age.
Fans are calling it Indiana Jones and the Goddamn Hippies, Indiana Jones and the Search for my Glasses, Indiana Jones and the Pension Plan of Doom.
Ford is 80 years old, having played the character since Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. His first outing as Indy was set in 1936. If he and the character are aged the same, the newest installment will be set in 1978 – the same year the script for the original was written.
In 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Sean Connery played Jones' aged father. Connery was only 58 when the Last Crusade was released – over two decades younger than Ford is now.
One user quoted Indy in Raiders: "It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage." Since then, Ford and Indy have put on 42 more years' worth of mileage.
Jones already had a long-awaited return in 2008, 19 years after the original run of films in the 1980s. Ford was a mere 66 when he starred alongside Shia LaBeouf in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. 14 years ago, the franchise was already making references to his advanced age and fans were wondering if the older actor could still be an action star.
While they are mercilessly trolling the older actor, most fans are excited to see him in action. Many have mentioned his incredible health; one mentioned that he went on a 1,000-mile bicycle journey a mere two months before filming started. It was a solo ride along the length of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico.
It's easy to be motivated to keep up one's health, one fan said, when being motivated by millions of dollars.
Little has been announced of the newest film, currently only titled as Indiana Jones 5. John Rhys-Davies will be reprising his role as Indy's friend Sallah, who appeared in Raiders and The Last Crusade. Also announced were Mads Mikkelsen as a likely villain, Antonio Banderas as an ally, and Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Steven Spielberg, who's directed all four Indiana Jones movies, was originally set to direct the film, initially intended for a 2019 release. Spielberg stepped down, wanting to pass the series to a new filmmaker. In May 2020, James Mangold was announced as director.
