Netflix's #1 Movie Is a Dull Sci-Fi Disaster With a Dismal 27% on RT & a Stacked Cast

The sci-fi horror movie The Last House was recently released on Netflix. Although it was poised to be a hit, it received a score of just 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite its star-studded cast, which includes Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, and its talented director, Louis Leterrier, and writer, Matthew Robinson, the flick turned out to be predictable and boring.

What Is 'The Last House' About?

Jason and Ann live in the suburbs with their two children. One day, torrential rain begins and doesn't stop – the family finds themselves unable to leave the house.

The doors and windows are sealed shut, and no makeshift tools can open them. They lose internet access and contact with the outside world, and their neighbors find themselves in the same predicament.

Days turned into months and years, and the family survived by rationing food and hunting. Eventually, they come face-to-face with the cause of their confinement – monstrous ocean creatures that have crawled onto land.

'The Last House' Is All About Weak Characters and a Complete Lack of Suspense

The main problem with The Last House is its complete lack of depth and tension. The claustrophobic premise could have steered the movie toward psychological horror, but the creators shied away from taking that risk.

The family dynamics are portrayed one-dimensionally and acted unconvincingly – the characters lack distinct identities, making it difficult for us to empathize with them.

The family's collection of DVDs, which they watch on repeat, provides a glimmer of humor: their favorites are Annie and Air Force One. However, this is not enough to save the movie.

Wagner Moura is natural as the family patriarch, but the other actors, including Greta Lee, leave little impression. The big reveal and the final battle against the monsters are laughable, and the creatures' designs evoke pity rather than fear.

'The Last House' Wanted to Be 'A Quiet Place', but Failed Miserably

The Last House attempts to reflect life in the 2020s, from self-isolation to global upheaval, but narrative cliches prevail over any original approach.

The creators were clearly inspired by A Quiet Place, Bird Box, and The Platform, yet the concept remains superficial. The dialogue is predictable, the staging is absurd, and the attempts to create an atmosphere of dread fall flat.

The only aspect beyond reproach is production designer Kevin Jenkins' work: the house is meticulously detailed and emerges as a character in its own right – a sanctuary that ultimately transforms into a destructive force.
