Industry season 5 adds Ben Platt and Russell Tovey to HBO's farewell cast
Industry, HBO's beloved drama about beautiful people doing cocaine near Bloomberg terminals, is filming its fifth and final season, and the guest list for the funeral keeps getting better. Ben Platt and Russell Tovey are the latest additions.
Which means the show's farewell run now contains a Tony winner, a Downton alum, a Westley, a Glee alum, a Girls alum, and Kit Harington's already-resident disgraced tech founder. This isn't a cast, it's a season finale of a prestige-TV fantasy draft.
Who they're playing
Platt is Matt Crenshaw, a venture capitalist and early backer of a wellness-tech company — the same wellness-tech company apparently run by Zosia Mamet's Carmen Dame, a fitness influencer turned founder-CEO, with Dianna Agron as her CFO, Skip Binksy. A fitness influencer with a startup, a true-believer VC, and a CFO who presumably knows where the bodies are buried: if you've ever wanted this show to do to the wellness economy what it did to crypto and ESG, start stretching now.
Tovey, meanwhile, plays Declan P. Davis, deputy to left-wing politician Nikesh Shah (Bally Gill) — a pairing that suggests season 5 is putting Westminster in the blast radius along with the wellness girlies. Both roles are guest spots, both actors have HBO history (The Politician's adjacent universe for Platt, Looking and Years and Years for Tovey), and both join previously announced newcomers Cary Elwes, Sam Riley, Jessica Brown Findlay, Luke Manley and Eduard Poliakov.
Why this final season already feels loaded
Quick recap of where the chaos left off:
- Harper (Myha'la) ended season 4 by detonating Tender, the fraudulent fintech fronted by Kit Harington's Sir Henry Muck.
- Yasmin (Marisa Abela) got a considerably less triumphant ending, which is the Yasmin experience in one sentence.
- And now the finale season is stacking VCs, politicians, influencers and mystery billionaires like a Jenga tower it fully intends to knock over.
The creators, Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, announced the ending themselves, with a sign-off that doubles as the show's thesis: "Unlike some of our characters, we know when to leave a party."
Five seasons, zero cast bloat regrets, and an exit before the decline sets in. Somewhere, eleven other prestige dramas that ran three seasons too long are staring at the floor.
