The sixth Insidious film ends, the credits start, and then the movie goes back for someone it left behind. Director Jacob Chase originally had the scene in the film itself.

Insidious: Out of the Further has one extra scene, and it plays midway through the credits rather than at the very end, per MEAWW. Stay seated once the names start rolling. There's nothing after it.

Sony opened the film on August 21, 2026. Chase wrote and directed it, with Jason Blum, James Wan and series creator Leigh Whannell among the producers, and Amelia Eve leads as Gemma Hall, a young woman who can reach spirits and pull them into the living world. The scene in the credits is the one Chase decided was too much for the ending.

Why the scene got moved

Chase told Dread Central that the sequence was originally in the main body of the film.

"It ended up distracting from the emotional payoff with Gemma at the end."

— Jacob Chase, writer-director, to Dread Central

So he moved it to the credits. The franchise has history with extras: the 2011 original slipped in a brief shot of an old woman blowing out a candle, and Insidious: The Red Door brought credits scenes back in 2023.

What happens after the credits

The scene belongs to Cyrus Lam (Sam Spruell), the dead cult leader whose spirit spent the film trying to use Gemma. In the finale, Gemma sends a houseful of demons back into the Further, the demons turn on Cyrus, who had promised them freedom, and Gemma escapes with Maya (Island Austin), per SlashFilm.

The credits scene shows what's left of him:

  • The chair: Cyrus is strapped into the Dead Dentist's chair (Jonathan Oldham), and the Dentist starts drilling into his teeth. The screams carry over the fade to black.
  • The audience: Other demons from the Further gather to watch.
  • The door: Keyface, the demon from 2018's Insidious: The Last Key, seals the red door behind him.

It's the nastiest image in the movie, which is exactly why Chase didn't want it competing with Gemma's ending.

Out of the Further spends its whole running time getting Gemma out of the Further. Its last image is the man locked inside it for good.

Does it set up Insidious 7?

Not explicitly. SlashFilm reads the scene's placement as a sign Cyrus may not be finished, and the series' one constant, Lin Shaye's Elise Rainier, is back in the cast list. Chase himself is open about it: "I have some ideas for the next one," he told Dread Central. "We'll see what happens!"

The numbers make the case for him. Out of the Further cost $18 million, beat Spider-Man: Brand New Day on its opening Friday, became the fifth Insidious film to open above $20 million, and has grossed about $157 million worldwide, per Wikipedia. Critics were cooler, at 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore, the same grade as The Red Door.

A horror franchise that makes nearly nine times its budget doesn't usually leave a door locked for long, even when a demon just locked it.
