'Ironheart': What Will the Upcoming Marvel Show Be About, Explained

Ironheart will focus on the successor to Marvel's most popular character, Tony Stark. However, the cult character's fame alone may not be enough to ensure the series' success, and here's why.
Avengers: Endgame was the last chance for Marvel fans to see the original lineup of superheroes. Now, Disney+ is gradually introducing replacements for familiar characters in new projects.
Fans of the franchise were especially upset by the tragic death of Iron Man. The Marvel bosses are not planning to resurrect the character portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., either in standalone projects or in brief appearances.
However, there is already a successor – the gifted inventor Riri Williams, whose story will be told in the series Ironheart.
What Will 'Ironheart' Be About?
The series's main character is the brilliant inventor Riri Williams, who debuted in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
For those who have not seen the film, it is worth noting that Riri does not have superpowers. As a talented scientist, she invents improved Iron Man armor.
Riri will need money for her new projects. Therefore, she will start collaborating with Parker Robbins, an influential entrepreneur nicknamed The Hood. However, The Hood decides to use Riri for his criminal activities.
'Ironheart' Creators & Main Actors
Ryan Coogler is the executive producer of Ironheart – he directed the Black Panther films and the recent horror hit Sinners.
Dominique Thorne will play the lead role, and Anthony Ramos will portray The Hood.
Sacha Baron Cohen will also appear in the show. Although the creators have not revealed what role he will play, fans assume it is the iconic comic book villain Mephisto.
'Ironheart' Release Date & Number of Episodes
Marvel recently released the first trailer for Ironheart. Consisting of six episodes, Ironheart is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on June 24.
The first three episodes will be released on premiere day, with the remaining three episodes released weekly on Tuesdays until July 15.
'Ironheart' Can Become Another Marvel Flop
Fans are already speculating that the Riri Williams adventure series could fail due to a lack of viewer interest and the absence of any marketing beyond the recent trailer.
Reddit user Comic_Book_Reader wrote:
“I do honestly believe they are just dumping this next month, releasing it to no fanfare, because it's been on the shelf for over 2 years, first being put on hold in the strikes in the second half of 2023, and eventually in limbo due to internal overhauls at Marvel, and interest thus being nonexistant.”
Marvel wanted to adapt the story of Riri Williams back in 2018. A script for a full-length film was created at that time, but it never reached the production stage.
Two years later, the studio returned to developing Ironheart, ultimately deciding to turn the movie into a miniseries. Production of the show began in the summer of 2022.
Work on Ironheart slowed down due to Hollywood strikes, resulting in the completion of filming and post-production only in the summer of 2024.
