A shocking twist made Criminal Minds fans wonder if the creators are planning a big return for Spencer Reid in the next season.

It is yet unknown whether Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution is happening, but Episode 4 of Season 1 seems to contain a hint about one of its possible storylines.

In the episode, JJ and her husband Will were finally given time to reconnect. But their sweet moment was ruined by a shocking twist at the end of the episode. Will revealed to JJ that he might have cancer. Even though it is not the final diagnosis, the news hit like a ton of bricks.

It was shocking not only for JJ but also for the fans who are not willing to say goodbye to one of the most beloved couples in the procedural.

The BAU members don't seem to get a break when it comes to their love life. Their partners often get the most tragic arcs. Only remember Reid's perfect girlfriend Maeve Donovan being murdered by a stalker and Hotchner's wife Haley being shot to death by antagonist George Foyet. Even Evolution returned with some heartbreaking news. According to the plot of the revival, David Rossi's wife died during the COVID-19 pandemic which led Rossi to a dark place. So why would the show repeat this arc with JJ?

Fans seem to think that this move hints at a long-debated pairing, JJ and Spencer Reid often called Jeid, and it makes some of them angry.

"If Criminal Minds: Evolution is using the possibility of Jemily or Jeid happening in another season and their way to go about it is by killing off Will, I will commit arson and homicide," one of the fans wrote on Twitter.

Fans think Jeid is possible in the next seasons because in the finale of Season 14 JJ professed her love for Reid while being held hostage by an unsub obsessed with the truth. While being held at gunpoint, JJ revealed that she had loved Reid ever since they first met. Considering JJ was already married to Will at the time, her declaration of love had become a highly uncomfortable theme for both profilers, and they agreed on considering it a lie to survive. While some fans were excited to see Jeid's relationship develop, others thought it to be ridiculous and out-of-character. In any case, killing off Will doesn't feel like the best way to bring JJ and Reid together.
