Avatar: Seven Havens gave its heroine a twin, a dark-furred companion and a name that literally means night. Fans think that's exactly why it's not her.

Nickelodeon's newest Avatar series premiered on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026, and Book 1 wrapped up its 13 episodes at the end of October. Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko built it around a premise that flips the franchise: a young Earthbender discovers she's the Avatar after Korra, but in this era the title marks her as humanity's destroyer, not its savior. She also has a long-lost twin. Fans have spent a month arguing about which of the two sisters is the real problem.

Spoilers for all of Book 1 from here.

Who Nisha and Pavi are

Nisha (Aishu Devan) and Pavi (Saheli Khan) are the twins, and the show sets them up as opposites. Nisha is the one who wants the Avatar job, with a fighting style episode 3, "The Order," calls chaotic. Pavi is peaceful and non-combative, and in episode 2, "Into the Storm," Nisha finds out that Pavi can bend all the elements too.

The "Dark Avatar" question comes straight from The Legend of Korra. In Korra's second season, Unalaq fused with Vaatu, the spirit of darkness and chaos, and became the Dark Avatar. Every Avatar since Wan has carried Raava, the spirit of light. Seven Havens now has two girls who both show signs of being the Avatar, and the obvious math is one Raava and one Vaatu.

The case for Nisha

The show hasn't been subtle about her, and fans have stacked up the evidence, as The Direct's breakdown lays out:

  • Her name: Nisha is a Sanskrit name meaning night, or darkness.
  • Her companion: Ruhi, voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, has dark fur.
  • Her style: The episode literally calls her fighting chaotic, and chaos is Vaatu's whole brand.

Book 1's ending added the heaviest piece. In the dunes of the Harshlands, a reckless use of dark spirit essence creates an expanding energy dome that pulls both sisters in. Inside, Pavi learns that Nisha, overcome by a similar dark energy years ago, caused their parents' deaths.

Why fans call it a red herring

That's a lot of clues for a franchise this careful, and the other twin has her own set. Nisha once asked Pavi, "But if I'm the Avatar… what does that make you?" Pavi's home has a tree that looks a lot like the Tree of Time, where Vaatu was once sealed. And a flashback shows a young Pavi being thrown through a portal as patterns appear on her body, the way Raava's markings appear on an Avatar.

The finale gives Pavi the bigger power-up, too. After learning the truth about their parents, she lashes out, opens her root chakra and enters a different kind of Avatar State, then has visions of her past lives and leaves for the Floating Isles with Jae. Nisha stays behind with Karthik, still spiritually blocked. Both sisters glow red-orange, and nothing in Book 1 confirms which spirit is in whom.

The show named one twin "darkness," gave her a dark pet and made her responsible for her parents' deaths. When a mystery hands you the culprit this early, it usually isn't the culprit.

My read

The premise already answers part of the question. Nickelodeon's own logline says that in this era, being the Avatar marks you as humanity's destroyer. If the world already treats the Avatar as the dark one, then "Dark Avatar" may not belong to one twin at all, and Seven Havens is set up to make both sisters prove they aren't it.

Book 2 is another 13 episodes, and there's no premiere date yet. Until then, Nisha has the name, the pet and the guilt, and Pavi has the Avatar State.
