Is the 2025 Horror Version of 'The Ugly Stepsister' Worth Watching?

I recently went looking for The Ugly Stepsister, and it turns out there are two versions that caught my attention. The first is the 2002 TV movie Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, starring Azura Skye and Stockard Channing.

Produced in the United States, it tells the Cinderella story from the stepsister’s perspective, which I found surprisingly fresh. While it’s not on Netflix or Prime Video, I discovered it’s available for free on YouTube — the quality isn’t perfect, but it’s still worth a watch if you’re curious.

Then there’s the 2025 Norwegian horror film The Ugly Stepsister, directed by Emilie Blichfeldt. I read that it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and will be released in the U.S. by Shudder, though no official streaming date has been announced yet.

I’m definitely keeping an eye on it because horror adaptations of fairy tales are my kind of thing.

Whether you start with the 2002 classic or wait for the 2025 horror version, both bring something unique to the table. I loved seeing how the same story can be reimagined so differently — from quirky and heartfelt to dark and twisted — proving there’s more to Cinderella than meets the eye.
