Exhale, Nolan-heads: The Rookie is renewed. Season 9 is happening, ABC made the call while season 8 was still mid-run, and the show will be back in January 2027.

But the renewal itself is the boring part. The terms are where it gets juicy.

First, the milestone

With season 9, this show about the oldest rookie in the LAPD becomes ABC's third longest-running drama ever — behind only Grey's Anatomy and NYPD Blue, and now tied with Dynasty. A Nathan Fillion procedural has outlasted empires, and honestly? Deserved. The cast — Fillion, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox and the rest — all ride again.

And the ambitions inside the building are not subtle. Creator Alexi Hawley told Deadline the cast's mindset, quoting star Melissa O'Neil:

"Let's Grey's Anatomy this thing."

Ma'am, that's a threat and a promise.

Now, the perk

Here's the detail that made me sit up. This was a straightforward renewal — no budget cuts attached. If you don't follow the grim economics of network TV, know this: long-running broadcast dramas basically don't get that anymore. Renewals now come with a haircut — trimmed episode counts, salary restructures, someone's beloved character suddenly "moving to Portland." The Rookie got none of that. Clean deal. Almost nobody else on the schedule this year can say the same.

How? A few unglamorous miracles stacked on top of each other:

  • the show was engineered lean from day one, even with a big-name lead;
  • a California tax credit keeps the LA shoot affordable;
  • and — this is real — the show became a TikTok phenomenon with viewers under 18, giving a nine-season-old cop drama the youth demo networks would sell a kidney for.

Teenagers on TikTok are the reason a broadcast procedural gets prestige-drama treatment in its ninth year. Television is a beautiful, stupid ecosystem.

There's even a spinoff, The Rookie: North, sitting in the pilot stage. Season 9 in January. The Grey's-ing continues.
