Spot the subtle warning signs hiding behind your furry friend's extra-long naps.

It is completely normal to panic a little when your usually playful cat suddenly starts snoozing the day away. But before you rush to the vet, it helps to know that felines are naturally built to sleep for the majority of the day, so an extra-long nap isn't always a red flag.

Here’s what you need to look out for: appetite, thirst, sleeping posture, reaction to sounds, and grooming habits.

A healthy adult cat routinely sleeps anywhere from 12 to 16 hours a day, and senior cats can log even more hours without anything being wrong at all. If your pet has always been a champion napper, you generally don't need to worry. The real issue is a sudden shift where your cat drops into a heavy, unreactive sleep, completely ignoring familiar triggers like a rustling treat bag or an opening door. When cats feel unwell, they instinctively hide their pain and conserve energy by retreating into a deep, deep sleep.

If you notice your cat is sleeping heavily and you spot changes in at least two areas from the warning list — like a sudden loss of appetite or a complete lack of grooming — it is time to take action and schedule a trip to the vet.
