James Cameron’s on his way to double Avatar’s already record-breaking box office revenue as the director reveals he’s already working on the third and forth movies.

Summary:

  • James Cameron ’s first two Avatar movies earned a combined $5B at the box office, and the director doesn’t intend to stop.
  • According to Cameron’s recent update, Avatar 3 has already entered post-production stages.
  • At the same time, the fourth movie is about 25% done and is being worked on simultaneously.

The director whose works absolutely dominate the list of the highest-grossing movies in history, James Cameron is seemingly looking to double his already more than impressive portfolio. With Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water clearing over $5B together, the director is already working on the third and fourth installments.

James Cameron Says Avatar 3 Is Almost Complete

During his recent visit to 2024's Saturn Awards, the legendary director spoke about his work on the new Avatar sequels and provided a huge update: according to James Cameron, the third installment is almost ready, and even the fourth movie has great progress already. There’s no stopping Cameron and his blue men spectacles!

“It’s pretty much in the can. <...> We've got about a quarter of movie 4 in the can. We’re post[production] on 3 and now doing the VFX, which is an enormous job. <...> We make little improvements as we go along, but we’re there,” the director told Screen Rant.

It seems like Avatar 3 will be finalized this year, and Cameron will immediately continue his work on the fourth movie. The director doesn’t intend to rest whatsoever.

Considering how long it took to create the first two movies (eight years for Avatar and five years for The Way of Water), Cameron’s rapid progress on the latest installments is quite jaw-dropping. For such an amazing pace, the director thanks not just his professional team but also the new technologies that speed up the process.

According to Cameron, it’s only now that the tech is advanced enough for his liking, allowing his crew to work on the movie way faster than before. Despite that, the director explains, ultimately, it’s not the technology that defines the quality of his movies — it’s “the minds and eyes of the computer artists.” The tech is a nice bonus.

We’ve seen that much in Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, so there’s no denying that James Cameron’s team is capable of unmatched CGI wonders. We’ll have even more wonders from them to gaze upon soon, if the director’s latest update is anything to go by.
