Thor may have joined forces with Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Endgame finale, but James Gunn couldn’t care less: it was his franchise and his rules.

It turns out that James Gunn was firmly against putting Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even though the finale of The Infinity Saga directly hinted at that exact possibility.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn recalled the first time he watched Avengers: Endgame and immediately decided that he wanted the God of Thunder to do nothing with his beloved heroes.

“I said in the script notes: 'I’m not gonna put him in. I don’t want to have Thor in the Guardians. I don’t want to do a movie with Thor. I don’t understand the character that much. I love watching his movies and I love Chris Hemsworth as a guy. I don't understand how to write that character."

Gunn added that he has his own opinions about post-credit scenes, which is “somewhat related to my own mistakes in my time with Marvel.” Even in his own movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he didn’t really enjoy the post-credits scene that teased Adam Warlock.

“I did not like what I did in Guardians 2 where we set up Adam Warlock and we set up the Guardians of the Galaxy and we set up all this s--- that I didn't necessarily plan on. Well, I guess I kind of planned on fulfilling that [Adam Warlock] promise, but you want to be careful about that. The way a post-credits scene works is a punch to the face, like, 'Oh my God! Look at this.' At times when you're using it just solely to set something up, sometimes you're screwing yourself over,” Gunn admitted.

Marvel Movies Have a Problem With Post-Credits Scene, Fans Say

Gunn isn’t alone in his reservations about the post-credits scenes. What started out as a great way to teach Marvel fans to sit through the entire credits roll has now evolved into storytelling traps that sometimes backfire.

“We need to go back to post credit scenes setting up the next movie not setting up a story beat that may or may not happen,” Redditor Tim_Hag said in a thread about unresolved MCU post-credit scenes.

Even with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, many people are still arguing whether the post-credits scene is yet another unresolved plot or just a closer on a story that’s already told. Some believe that the post-credits scene “screams Quill will be back for the next Avengers film,” while others remain genuinely confused.
