James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Gets First Reviews & Praise for a Character Critics “Would Rather See a Movie About”

DC’s upcoming reboot of the Superman story might not be an instant hit right away, though it still succeeded in getting the first critics’ interest in some supporting characters — and the choice might be surprising.
After a major success of his Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad, James Gunn is back on track with a new superhero movie, this time dressing David Corenswet in the Superman suit and following the iconic hero’s new adventures in an attempt to save the world from yet another collapse.
The movie isn’t coming to theatres worldwide until July 11, though its first reviews are already there for fans to guess what to expect from the new Superman.
Despite some taking the film’s possible critical and commercial success with a grain of salt, the reviews so far are mostly favourable — here’s everything the critics have said about Superman so far.
‘Superman’ Is Labeled a “Thrilling Start to DC’s New Era”
It’s been a long time since James Gunn proved himself as DC’s new hope for better future movies, so no wonder his Superman is mostly getting praise from its first viewers right ahead of the world premiere.
“‘Superman’ soars with heart, humor, and style—a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero. James Gunn sets a fresh tone while honoring the character’s legacy, and David Corenswet shines with sincerity and strength. A promising, thrilling start to DC’s new era”, film critic Bryan Sudfield shared on X.
“This is the BEST #Superman movie to date. When James Gunn gets out of the way & lets his work speak for itself, it’s incredible. It’s not perfect, but darn close & made me a believer in Gunn’s #DC”, Grace Randolph added.
“James Gunn’s #Superman is the hero’s most vibrant, optimistic, and character-driven big screen outing since Richard Donner was as running the show. It lays a solid groundwork for a larger universe, but this is Superman’s story and a damn good one. Marvel let a big fish get away”, Nick Spake noted.
‘Superman’ First Viewers Have Special Praise for Superdog Krypto
Whether there are superheroes flying around, fighting with villains and saving the world on the screen or not, it’s always their loyal pet that would get even more attention from the audiences — and some critics got it right.
Among those who watched Gunn’s new movie, but didn’t quite like the story as a whole was movie critic Peter Howell who pointed out the director’s preference of style over narrative, summarising Superman as not the best start of DC’s new era — however, there was someone who Howell was truly delighted to see in action.
“David Corenswet plays a boyishly sweet Superman, constantly getting his ass kicked; he’d be better as the lead in a Dudley Do-Right movie. Rachel Brosnahan makes a spiky Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is more obnoxious than villainous. The real star of the show is superdog Krypto, who steals every scene he’s in — I’d rather see a movie about him”, Howell wrote on X.
When Will ‘Superman’ Be Released?
The movie is coming to theatres across the world on July 11.
