Jason Momoa is drawing on his Hawaiian roots for the grand new historical drama Chief of War.

Co-created by Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett and the 45-year-old actor, who also penned and executive produced the series, this nine-part Apple TV+ show is based on real events surrounding the unification of the Hawaiian islands amid the threat of colonisation from Western powers in the late 18th century.

The first trailer, released by Apple TV+ on Thursday, 10th July, sees Momoa take centre stage as Ka‘iana, a revered warrior and fierce guardian of his homeland, known among his people as "the first of our people." His commanding presence sets the tone for this epic saga.

He warns, “They will be coming soon,” referring to the arrival of Western settlers, before adding a stark warning:

“If this island is divided, this kingdom will fall.”

The three-minute trailer is packed with action, illustrating what’s at stake for the indigenous inhabitants and their pristine islands as they grapple with internal strife and the looming threat of foreign settlements.

Chief of War premieres with two episodes on 1st August, with subsequent episodes released weekly on Fridays via Apple TV+. This series promises a powerful portrayal of Hawaiian history and resilience.
