Despite not having any new acting credits, Johnny Depp has had his name making constant headlines recently.

After a scandalous trial with ex-wife Amber Heard back in 2022, the actor started afresh all his professional life which was marked by his leading role in a French historical drama Jeanne du Barry — but even here Depp wouldn’t avoid a controversial story with his part in it.

Now that some revelations about the actor’s inappropriate behavior on set have seen the light with everybody’s interest in it, the movie’s director suddenly decided to debunk it all.

It all started with Jeanne du Barry’s director and main actress Maïwenn who recently revealed that working with Johnny Depp was probably one of the hardest challenges in her career — as she stated, the whole crew felt scared when the actor was present on set.

When Maïwenn’s interview received immense publicity and eventually went viral all over the internet, the director didn’t shy away from clarifying some things in yet another interview.

Thus, according to Maïwenn, her words about her failed attempts to get along with Depp were taken out of context while her statement about the actor being scary was in fact about “his charisma, his notoriety, his star status, etc.”

The director admitted that she was shocked by numerous catchy headlines that had meant something very different from what she had initially implied.

Maïwenn later confessed that she should’ve opted for “impressive” instead of “scary” if she had known that the interviewer would use her words “in such a malicious way.”

Jeanne du Barry first premiered in Cannes back in 2023 and marked Johnny Depp’s first acting role since his defamation trial with Amber Heard. The movie’s heated discussion in the media right now may be due to the fact that it’s being released in the US only now, almost a year after its premiere in France.

Jeanne du Barry will hit the American cinemas on May 2.
