Jenna Ortega talks about becoming a director. Here’s what we know — and why it can be a lot better than you’d expect.

Fresh off the Death of a Unicorn, Jenna Ortega is ready to make her next move.

During her recent talk with V Magazine, Ortega revealed that she plans to direct a script she's been keeping under wraps for 10 years now. She said:

“I have a script that I’ve known that I was going to make for almost 10 years…It’s only now that I’m actually starting to take the steps to get it made, which is really interesting.”

What Do Fans Think of Jenna Ortega Becoming a Director?

As with any bold move in Hollywood, the announcement sparked some backlash.

“When every film is directed by an LA child actor then each film will have the smallest perspective possible. Simulating what a real life is like without having lived one,” Redditor orbjo wrote.

There were others, however, who supported Ortega's new venture.

“I would too if I were her. Creatives have turned into brands, and you're crazy not to take advantage while it's not half as saturated as it will be,” Redditor kaizencraft said.

“She’s got a distinct media personality and has so far picked interesting projects as an adult. I have a hunch she could be great in the director seat, more so than other former child actors,” Redditor National-Friend777 noted.

Why Ortega's Directorial Debut Might Actually Be Brilliant

Despite the criticism, Ortega is more prepared than most realize. Her recent role as executive producer on both Death of a Unicorn and Wednesday Season 2 has given her that precious behind-the-scenes experience.

“I think learning how to produce and being a part of projects in that way has informed me so much. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes that I wasn’t aware of. I’m just putting the puzzle pieces together in my head. So I think I needed a few years of that under my belt to understand the order of doing things,” Ortega explained in the same interview.

Ortega has an eye for quality material. We've seen her in Scream, X, The Fallout. Her “controversial” notes on Wednesday contributed to making one of Netflix 's biggest hits.

So while we wait for more details about Ortega's directorial vision, there's plenty of her work to enjoy in the meantime. Catch her iconic performance as Wednesday Addams on Netflix, or check out her latest film, Death of a Unicorn on Amazon Video and Fandango At Home.
