A24’s new and seemingly disappointing horror comedy is heading to streaming in just about two weeks.

Released in theatres worldwide on March 7, Death of a Unicorn starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd is about to end its run with pretty divisive results, even though the movie was expected to become a major hit.

Despite its impeccable reputation, A24 has long remained a hit-or-miss movie studio just like many others, and the company’s most recent film confirms so. So far, Death of a Unicorn horror grossed around $13 million against its budget of $15 million, also garnering mixed reviews from critics. However, it still might have a chance to get a bigger audience once the movie lands on streaming platforms already this month.

Those who weren’t quick enough to catch the movie in theatres will be able to do so on streaming pretty soon — When to Stream’s report suggests Death of a Unicorn will be available on VOD and digital platforms starting from April 29.

Also starring Will Poulter and Téa Leoni in supporting roles, the film follows Rudd and Ortega’s Elliot and his teen daughter Ridley who are about to spend a weekend at the luxurious estate of the former’s boss.

The initial plan goes down the drain when Elliot accidentally hits and kills a unicorn; while his boss is coming up with a plan to take some advantage of the creature’s miraculous abilities, the unicorn’s parents are already there to destroy everyone involved in the murder.

What Critics Have to Say About Death of a Unicorn

Even with some help from the star-studded cast, Death of a Unicorn wasn’t safe from its own script’s failure that it has been repeatedly slammed for.

“With Scharfman’s clunking screenplay neither as satirically witty nor as scary as it needs to be, Death of a Unicorn’s potential is fatally impaled by shockingly poor CGI”, Orion’s Shoulder’s Stephen A. Russell wrote.

Meanwhile, Jim Schembri on his own website suggested the movie would get closer to its real status had it been called Death of a Good Idea.

“When one looks at a unicorn, one would think of imagination, wonder, and beauty – things that would motivate inspiration among many. Which makes the title of the film Death of a Unicorn such a fitting way to describe how mediocre it is”, Impulse Gamer’s Harris Dang also added.

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, Death of a Unicorn holds scores of 52% and 78% from critics and viewers
  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 6.3/10
