Jennifer Lopez has reminded the world how great she is as an actress in last year’s action movie The Mother, and now she continues to conquer the cinematic world in the new Netflix’s movie Atlas, which marks the actress’ first role in a sci-fi movie since her starring in The Cell, a fantastic thriller, released almost a quarter of the century ago.
The first Atlas’ teaser, giving adrenaline, suspense and futuristic vibes, showcases Lopez, playing the titular character, Atlas Shepherd, a misanthropic data analyst who is sent to space with a mission to stop a renegade robot, the mystery of whose past is somewhat connected with Atlas herself. Despite the heroine’s strong distrust of AI, she will need to tone it down and trust it to save humanity from an awful catastrophe.
From the short video we also acknowledge that the cast of the upcoming movie also include last Oscars movies’ actors - Barbie ’s Simu Liu and American Fiction’s Sterling K. Brown, while the Atlas’ direction is in the hands of Brad Peyton (San Andreas, Rampage).
Having signed a multi-year contract with Netflix in 2021, Jennifer Lopez recently starred in another platform’s project, The Mother, where her character collaborates with the FBI to rescue her kidnapped daughter. This thriller became quite a success, according to the number of its viewing hours, though receiving poor reviews from critics.

Lopez’s performance gained mostly positive assessments, with some of the viewers comparing her to a female version of Matt Damon’s Bourne in The Bourne franchise.
However, there is a lot of criticism concerning the idea of one of today’s biggest pop icons starring in a space movie.
