Deadpool we know and love could have been so much different if things had gone another way.

It’s almost impossible to imagine a scenario where the fourth-wall-breaking Deadpool isn't played by Ryan Reynolds. However, it turns out that Jensen Ackles, best known for his roles in The Boys and Supernatural, was once in the running for the iconic role.

During an appearance at SPN PHX J2, Ackles shared that he was very much in talks for a certain movie — which he later confirmed to be Deadpool. However, due to his commitments to Supernatural, he wasn't available.

"The train just kind of stopped there," he remarked.

But it wasn't all regret and what-ifs. Ackles humorously mentioned that it was probably for the best, hinting at the potential awkwardness of working with an ex-girlfriend on the Deadpool project.

The actor was referring to Morena Baccarin, who played Vanessa Carlysle, Wade Wilson's charming fiancée.

While Ryan Reynolds' portrayal of Deadpool in 2016 was met with widespread acclaim, one can't help but wonder how Ackles would have approached the character. Would he have brought the same level of wit and charm? Or perhaps a different flavor of humor?

We'll never know for sure, but Ackles seems content with how things turned out. He even joked that he might have "messed that up for a lot of people" had he been a part of it.

Despite missing out on Deadpool, Ackles hasn't been a stranger to the superhero genre. He voiced Batman in animated films, and fans constantly beg DC to make him a live-action Batman.

And of course, he has been absolutely great as Soldier Boy in Amazon’s The Boys, a character he describes as "Captain America on his *ss." This makes sense, given that Soldier Boy, just like most of The Boys’ characters, is a parody. In this cast, a parody of Marvel's Captain America.

Interestingly, there were actual rumors that Ackles auditioned for the role of Captain America. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor dispelled these rumors by saying: "Did I audition for Captain America? No, I did not."
