Josh Duhamel's Speak movie cast: he leads a horror thriller that's basically The Shining with a ventriloquist dummy
A father, an inherited object radiating bad vibes, a kid who's the only one in the house doing the math — some horror equations never stop balancing, they just get new props.
The setup, in one breath: it's 1994, a 12-year-old boy watches his father inherit a vintage ventriloquist dummy and then watches that father come apart at the seams, until the kid can no longer tell where reality ends and the supernatural begins.
Swap the dummy for a haunted hotel and the boy for Danny Torrance, and you can see the skeleton — dad unravels, child witnesses, dread compounds. The Overlook just fits in a suitcase now.
Duhamel as the dad who breaks
Josh Duhamel leads the film as the father in question — and this is the good kind of casting-against-warmth, handing the affable Transformers guy a role where affability is the thing that erodes on camera. Duhamel at 53 has been drifting steadily into genre territory; this is the full plunge.
Behind the camera is John Kissack, directing a script he wrote with Joe Carnahan and Casey Glitner, and Kissack is not being coy about his influences:
"I grew up in the '90s reading Stephen King and watching VHS horror movies... we're going to make a killer movie."
His elevator pitch for the tone: "Speak fuses the nostalgia of that era with an approach that's elevated and character-driven." So: King-brand paternal collapse, VHS grain in its soul, dummy included.

The people writing the checks believe
The producer roster is the tell that this isn't some direct-to-streaming filler:
- Lorenzo di Bonaventura — the Transformers franchise producer, reuniting with Duhamel in a very different weight class;
- Joe Carnahan — co-writer and producer, who calls Kissack "one of the most tenacious and talented young filmmakers I've had the good fortune of finding";
- Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment — with the project being shopped to international buyers at the Toronto film market;
- Cameras roll in October 2026, with a worldwide release planned for 2027.
Horror ventriloquist dummies have a hit rate that borders on unfair — Dead Silence, Goosebumps' Slappy, the Twilight Zone. Nobody has ever looked at one and felt fine.
The rest of the cast hasn't been announced yet, which means there's still a child actor out there, blissfully unaware, about to spend three months screaming at a wooden man. Break a leg, kid.
