The story revolves around Gabimaru, a ninja and the most powerful shinobi in his village. He was framed by his own leader and sentenced to death. Now, his only chance for mercy is to travel to a mysterious island and find the elixir of immortality.

Accompanying him to the island are other condemned criminals, as well as samurai executioners tasked with monitoring and executing them if they disobey.

However, it soon becomes clear that the island is inhabited by celestials – powerful beings who wield the power of Tao and dream of true immortality.

One of the main features of Hell's Paradise is the island itself. MAPPA's artists have created a captivating world full of vibrant colors, including flowers, insects, and strange and frightening creatures.

Rather than using dull or gloomy tones, the creators convey an atmosphere of horror through brightness, which only heightens the sense of unease.

At the same time, the creators maintain a focus on realism. The characters bond under extreme conditions, but the writers never let the viewer forget who the executioner is and who the criminal is.

'Hell's Paradise' Has an Unconventional Protagonist & Well-Written Supporting Characters

The main difference between Hell's Paradise and many other shonens is its main character. Gabimaru isn't an awkward teenager who dreams of becoming Hokage or Pirate King. He's a seasoned assassin, and his goal isn't shonen-esque – he simply wants to return to his wife.

At first, he seems like a man who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, but appearances can be deceiving. Paradoxically, on a hellish island full of dangers, Gabimaru discovers a capacity for compassion.

Yet Gabimaru is just one of many vibrant characters. There's the gentle yet steadfast executioner Sagiri, the merciless yet alluring kunoichi Yuzuriha, the reliable blind samurai Shion, and the charismatic bandit Chobei. Each character has his or her own story, which the viewer will surely learn.
