‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Director Regrets Nothing After Leaving ‘Star Wars’ Behind

Gareth Edwards talks about the Star Wars universe and why he's done with Rogue One for good as he gets ready for the Jurassic World: Rebirth release.
Back in 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story crushed box office expectations, raking in an impressive $1 billion globally and securing its spot as 2016's second-highest-grossing film.
Yes, but: despite this massive success, director Gareth Edwards has made it very clear he's not planning a return trip to that galaxy far, far away. Yet his departure isn't fueled by any negativity toward the franchise. In his interview to Business Insider, Edwards explained:
“I'm very happy to move on and do my thing. It's [Star Wars] the thing that was in my life before I knew what a film was. It's like your mom; it's like something that's a part of you. I'm always fascinated by what they're doing. I never stop loving that trilogy.”
Gareth Edwards Being Way Too Humble About ‘Rogue One’
Edwards thinks that the best reward is the audience appreciation for the movie and the way that film ages.
“It's the kid who comes up to you 20 years from now and goes, 'Oh my god, I loved that movie!' I think that's the reward,” he said in the same interview.
But when it comes to viewers’ praise, he is also very humble. When mentioned that Rogue One is considered the best Star Wars movie out there, he stated:
“I don't agree with it, but I appreciate it. I'm very grateful that people say nice things.”
What Did Gareth Edwards Do Since ‘Rogue One’?
Since the success of Rogue One, Gareth Edwards has been busy creating more mind-blowing cinema.
After Rogue One, Edwards wrote and directed The Creator, a sci-fi thriller about a former soldier who discovers the robots' secret weapon. As Vanity Fair put it:
“Now that Edwards is free of Star Wars (though his Star Wars movie is a good one), he is a filmmaker to be fostered and encouraged, so that he might make ever more arresting entertainments like The Creator.”
Next up: Edwards is bringing dinosaurs back to life with Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey. Based on his track record of breathing fresh life into established franchises, dinosaur fans have plenty to look forward to.
When ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Comes Out?
