Not everyone does well under pressure.

Summary:

  • Titanic is a romantic disaster movie directed by James Cameron, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
  • The movie was a commercial and critical success, opening up every Hollywood opportunity for both leads.
  • However, according to Kate Winslet, she did not want to be famous after Titanic.

Today, it's hard to imagine big names like Leonardo DiCaprio or Kate Winslet struggling with their status. These actors are considered Hollywood's elite, and their names will forever be remembered and praised within the industry.

But that wasn't always the case. Back in the 90s, they were both just starting out in their careers. Though both had had some success before, the response to Titanic became the true test of character and initiation into the A-list celebrity lifestyle.

Unfortunately, it came at a price that not everyone was willing to pay.

While many new actors dream of having the kind of amazing start that Kate Winslet had, the reality of sudden fame wasn't as exciting as it might sound.

After playing Rose in James Cameron's Titanic, she had to practically go into hiding for a while before she was ready to return to the public eye.

Speaking to PORTER for a cover story, the actress finally revealed why she decided to take a step back after Titanic instead of diving head first into everything Hollywood had to offer. The decision, it turns out, had nothing to do with her artistic aspirations and everything to do with self-care.

“Journalists would always say, ‘After Titanic, you could have done anything and yet you chose to do these small things’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, you bet your f*ckin’ life I did! Because, guess what, being famous was horrible,” the actress explained.

Winslet did not find the fame very pleasant. After the runaway success of the tragic love story she starred in with Leonardo DiCaprio, every media outlet tried to hunt her down, interfering with her private life and making hurtful statements. So the idea of staying in the shadows for a while came up.

Fortunately for TV and movie fans, as well as all the creators who have worked with the actress since, Winslet's public career hasn't overpowered the joy of doing what she loves. Slowly but surely, the actress has built an amazing filmography that continues to thrive and expand to this day.
