Keke Wyatt was arrested on child cruelty charges in Georgia — and the news took five days to get out
Five days passed between the booking and the first headline, and the reporting still disagrees on the one detail that matters most: which of Georgia's three very different versions of this charge she is actually facing.
Keke Wyatt was arrested on September 20 in Henry County, Georgia, and booked on three charges: terroristic threats, simple assault and cruelty to children. TMZ, which broke the story on Friday, says the Henry County Sheriff's Office confirmed the booking. She posted a $1,050 bond and was released on September 22.
That is where the record runs out. Nobody has said who the alleged victim is, what the threat was or what happened in that house. Wyatt hasn't commented. Parade notes her feed has been busy with something else entirely: her set at the OKC R&B Festival on October 4.
Arrested on a Sunday, out on a Tuesday, public on a Friday: the story reached fans five days after it reached the jail.
The charge has three versions, and nobody has said which one this is
Here is the part the headlines skip. Georgia law splits cruelty to children into three degrees, and they are not variations on a theme, they are different crimes:
- First degree — maliciously causing a child "cruel or excessive physical or mental pain," or willfully depriving a child of food and care. A felony, 5 to 20 years.
- Second degree — the same harm caused through criminal negligence. A felony, 1 to 10 years.
- Third degree — letting a child witness a forcible felony, battery or family violence battery, or committing one while knowing a child can see or hear it. A misdemeanor on a first or second conviction, and no physical injury to the child is required.
Complex lists the count as third degree. Other outlets say the degree isn't in the booking report at all. The distance between those two readings is the distance between a misdemeanor and up to 20 years, and only the court filings will close it.
Eleven kids, a TV show and a case from 2001
Wyatt is a mother of 11, across three marriages. The youngest, Ke'Zyah, was born in 2022 after doctors diagnosed trisomy 13 during the pregnancy and recommended ending it. She and then-husband Zackariah Darring refused:
"My husband & I made the decision not to accept the Medical Specialist's suggestion to terminate our baby early."
Most of that family life has played out on camera: three seasons of TV One's R&B Divas: Atlanta, a turn on Marriage Boot Camp and, since 2023, her own WE tv series, Keke Wyatt's World. Before the reality era she was the voice opposite Avant on "My First Love" and "Nothing in This World," the second a No. 4 R&B hit.
This isn't her first time in a courtroom. On Christmas Day 2001, her then-husband and manager Rahmat Morton was stabbed at their home in Shelbyville, Kentucky. A grand jury indicted her for second-degree assault; she said it was self-defense, and the charge was later dropped. That case never reached a verdict. This one, for now, has nothing on the record but a booking sheet.
