Everyone is talking about the upcoming spinoff and the fact that life there is still set in Gilead, but what does that mean for the characters? Let's find out.

As news of The Handmaid's Tale's season 6 and its upcoming spinoff continues to flood social media, questions about it are being answered by the higher-ups. The show's executive producers, Bruce Miller and Warren Littlefield, explained how the OG series' main character, Gilead, will be portrayed in Hulu 's follow-up spinoff, The Testaments.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the two executives made sure fans understood that Gilead will be completely different in the new show. The key point that will make this possible is the POV from which the story is told. As you may already know, the story will be seen through the eyes of girls who grew up in the totalitarian system.

How Can Gilead Be Different for the New Generation?

The main idea that makes Gilead have two sides is that The Testaments will revolve around the people who have only seen one world... and that's Gilead. The new generation born there is unaware of an alternate reality, and more importantly, hasn't been forced to leave it.

Miller mentioned in the interviews that when June was in Gilead, she was "at the bottom of the ladder" and was barely considered a woman, but for her daughter, Agnes Mackenzie, the story is completely different. The girl is at the top of the ladder.

It doesn't mean that her life is all sunshine and rainbows, it just means that while June's life was unimportant and she could have easily died a thousand times over, the new generation, including Agnes, will be extremely valued. How will that affect their lives? Let’s wait and see.
