Kings of Jo'burg season 3 ending explained: who survives the villa massacre
Season 3 of Kings of Jo'burg ends with a rocket fired into a villa where a family has just had a baby. Exactly one person walks out, and she can't walk yet.
Netflix released all seven episodes of Kings of Jo'burg season 3 on June 13, 2025, and the finale, "Blood for Blood," closes on the worst attack of the season. Gunmen hit the villa where Veronica Masire (Connie Ferguson) and her partner Isador (Malik Yoba) are living with their newborn daughter, and Film Fugitives' breakdown of the ending lists one survivor. It's the baby. The mermaid's curse survives with her.
The villa is the last of three massacres in the season. The first two decide who is still standing when the rocket comes in.
The three attacks of season 3
- The safehouse: Veronica goes into labor at Phumzi's aunt's home in Cape Town, and Gavin Salat (Clint Brink), the King of Cape Town, sends his RIP boys after her. Isador and Phumzi kill every one of them, and Veronica gives birth (Film Fugitives' recap).
- The police station: Gail Basia (Altovise Lawrence) captures Salat and brings him in. He uses the powers of Oom, the supernatural being backing him, and kills everyone in the station, Basia included.
- The villa: After the birth, Isador opens the door to a visitor and is shot. A second gunman fires a rocket launcher into the villa and kills Veronica. She had already put her daughter in a secure room, and the baby lives.
Only the third attack works, and it's the one nobody claims. The show never names who sent the gunmen. Recaps point to Nigerian crime lord Aliko Bajo, over a cocaine-shipment deal that fell apart, but that's an inference, not a scene.

Who dies, who's left
The villa is only half the body count. The rest of the finale clears out most of the men who ran the season:
- Mo Masire (Zolisa Xaluva): He sabotages Salat's deal and then takes on Oom in the ocean. The mermaid kills Oom and sends Mo back up, but without her protection he dies, and Sting later visits his grave.
- Gavin Salat: He runs with the drug money, the cartel corners him, and they shoot him dead.
- Lester (Abdul Khoza): Fatally shot in the fallout of the deal, he dies admitting he regrets betraying the family.
- Karim (Keenan Arrison): Sting kills him to avenge Leon.
- Keneilwe Masire (Thembi Seete): Alive, and now the only surviving Masire sibling. She arrives at the villa after the attack, and emergency responders hand her Veronica's daughter.
Keneilwe looks down and sees the baby's eyes glowing ocean blue. That's the mermaid's mark, which means the curse Mo just died trying to break has a new host, and the host is a newborn. Phumzi made it through the safehouse fight, though the recaps don't place her at the villa or settle where she ends up.
The Masires spent three seasons trying to pay off the mermaid. She closed season 3 by collecting a newborn.
Isador, the season's import
Isador's death lands harder because of who plays him. Malik Yoba (New York Undercover, Why Did I Get Married?) came to South Africa in 2024 to screen a documentary about real estate, met the show through executive producer Samad Davis and ended up cast in his African screen debut. He spends the season as Veronica's partner and, at the safehouse, her last line of defense.

The show's creator, the late Shona Ferguson, who played the original king Simon "Vader" Masire, told an interviewer in 2021 that South Africans idolize America so much they miss that "Hollywood is looking at us". Four years later, Hollywood sent Malik Yoba, and the finale shot him at the front door.
Connie Ferguson, Shona's widow, plays Veronica and executive produces. At the season 3 junket she said the team needed the best cast and crew, and the budget, to shoot the season cinematically.
"This season was a big task, coming from two successful seasons."

What season 4 would inherit
Netflix hasn't renewed Kings of Jo'burg, so everything after the villa is open. If the show comes back, the pieces on the board are a reluctant Masire sister, a cursed infant, an unconfirmed enemy in Aliko Bajo and a mermaid who has never once been paid in full.

She'd have to grow up first. For now, the next Masire heir can't hold up her own head.
