Kody and Robyn Brown have left Sister Wives after 16 years, and season 21 returns on October 4 with only the ex-wives
TLC put the news in a title card in the middle of a trailer, which is a cold way to end 16 years. Kody Brown and Robyn are not coming back to Sister Wives. Season 21 arrives on 4 October with the three women who left him — and, going by the trailer, they were as surprised as you are.
TLC did not put out a press release. It put a title card in the middle of the season 21 trailer: "After 16 years of filming Sister Wives, Kody & Robyn will not be returning to the show." The season lands on 4 October, and the man the entire premise was built around will not be in it.
Neither will Robyn — which leaves the arithmetic looking strange. A programme called Sister Wives is coming back without a single current wife. Christine, Janelle and Meri are all ex-wives. Robyn was the last woman still in a relationship with Kody, and she is out of the show along with him.
The trailer suggests the other three learned about it roughly the way the audience did — on camera, after the fact. Janelle's line is the one that will get clipped: "I was flabbergasted, really, when I got the news." Christine is blunter and less amused. "I don't know what it means," she says. "I have no idea."

So the season is no longer a plural-marriage show. It is three women in their fifties rebuilding, separately and awkwardly together: Janelle's relationship with her boyfriend Pete goes on camera, Meri is dating again, and the three of them try to work as a unit rather than as a former hierarchy. Christine, in the trailer, worries out loud that those conversations "could go terribly wrong."

How a show about four wives ran out of wives
It did not collapse at once. It came apart one marriage at a time, on camera, over about four years.
- November 2021. Christine ends it after 25 years and moves back to Utah. She marries David Woolley in October 2023.
- December 2022. Janelle's separation is confirmed.
- 10 January 2023. Meri announces her marriage is over — the one both had long described as a non-sexual arrangement rather than a marriage.
- February 2025. Robyn is the only wife left, and the show says so out loud.
- 14 September 2026. Kody and Robyn are gone too.
Twenty seasons of one family
The scale is worth stating, because reality shows rarely get this long a run. Sister Wives premiered on 26 September 2010 and has produced 20 seasons and 209 episodes. TLC has broadcast this one family's marriages, relocations from Utah to Las Vegas to Flagstaff, financial disasters, funerals and divorces for the entire life of the streaming era.
Last season closed on what the internet named Kody's apology tour, and it did not land — several of his adult children still are not speaking to him. That, more than any single split, is the context for a trailer in which nobody defends his absence.
A show can survive losing its premise. What it cannot survive is the audience deciding the premise was the problem.
Neither Kody nor Robyn has commented. Whether this is a pause, a spin-off in waiting or the end of their television careers is the one thing the trailer does not answer — and 4 October is three weeks away.
