Superman is out in theaters. The movie has a huge cast, but Krypto is the one who stole the show. He has the most perfect casting and the cutest prototype ever.

The talk around Superman has centered on its star-studded cast: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult. But there's one casting decision that was just perfect. Krypto the Dog brings comic relief and humanizes Superman.

The best part: there's not one, but two real-life good boys behind the character.

James Gunn Was Inspired By His Rescue Dog While Making ‘Superman’

First off, we need to mention that Krypto was inspired by director James Gunn's adopted dog Ozu.

Fun fact: Ozu was actually the model for Krypto's CGI. On Bluesky Gunn shared a cute video of Ozu reacting to Krypto.

The director said:

“This is my dog Ozu barking at the screen. Krypto was actually 3D modeled after Ozu's body. We 3D captured Ozu and turned him into Krypto. We turned him white and anyway, every time he sees himself come on screen he tries to murder himself.”

According to Gunn in a New York Times interview, Ozu straight-up “despised” the whole process.

“He has to stand on this table and then there’s a globe of cameras all the way around him. They take pictures and we kind of move him around a little bit and it gets every angle of him,” Gunn said.

The Actor Dog Who Played Krypto in ‘Superman’

But Krypto wasn't fully CGI. In some scenes, there was a real dog actor playing him. Meet Jolene. She's absolutely adorable.

Jolene's owner even shared the cutest pics from their movie viewing party, writing that “the support and love from friends has truly been the best.”

What’s Next for Krypto in ‘Superman’?

Krypto has cemented himself as a fan favorite in the new DCU and he's not going anywhere. The good news for Krypto fans doesn't end with Superman. The super-powered pup will also appear in the upcoming Supergirl film, continuing his adventures in the DC Universe.

For now, we all have to go to theaters to give Ozu, Jolene and the rest of the crew some love.
