'Law & Order: SVU's Mariska Hargitay Launches Own Production, Sets First Project's Premiere Date

The actress’ directorial feature debut, produced by Hargitay’s new production company, has just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and is coming on streaming already next month. Here’s everything to know about the upcoming movie and the actress’ plans for Mighty Entertainment’s future.
Things are about to get to another level for Law & Order: SVU’s star Mariska Hargitay who this year has debuted as both movie director and production company owner.
According to Variety, the actress has announced the launch of Mighty Entertainment, a producing company with scripted and unscripted divisions which is already about to introduce its first ever project and Hargitay’s first directorial work My Mom Jane.
The documentary movie had its premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and opened to raving reviews from critics, so it might be worth waiting — especially since there’s not so much time left until My Mom Jane lands on streaming.
Mariska Hargitay Says Her Personal Story in ‘My Mom Jane’ Will “Make the World Feel a Little Safer”
The movie, which is currently scheduled for a release on HBO in late June, will delve into the life and career of Hargitay’s mother Jayne Mansfield, an actress and a 1950s sex symbol who died in a traffic collision at the age of 34 back in 1967.
Hargitay was just 3 years old at the time, but the personal tragedy made her feel like this could be a way to bond with people via cinema rather than something she’d kept to herself.
“There are so many stories to tell — so many stories that are so basic to our humanity, like ‘My Mom Jayne.’ I want to tell stories that make the world feel a little safer, cozier and give hope, while at the same time elevating different voices that have been marginalized or people who aren’t ready to come forward. There’s a safety in getting immersed in somebody else’s story”, the actress said in a statement.
She also added that the new beginnings won’t affect her role in Law & Order: SVU since she found “a really beautiful way to balance what I do with ‘SVU,’ and scratch that itch of doing something completely different, and now I feel like I have the capacity and it won’t take anything away”.
Mariska Hargitay’s Production Company Name Also Has a Symbolic Meaning
Mighty Entertainment’s both logo and name aren’t just something inspiring that Hargitay’s team came up with; in fact, both refer to the actress’ personal background.
“I was dating somebody in my 20s, and he was friends with Jack Nicholson. Jack Nicholson said, ‘How’s Mighty?’ It was my favorite nickname, because I was like, ‘That’s right, Jack,’ and I met him maybe twice. I’ll take it, I’ll own it, and I’ll run with that”, Hargitay said.
In its turn, the logo, which is basically a girl on a bike, is a reference to an old photo of Hargitay taken at the time when she was three years old and was learning to ride a bike.
“I’m leaning forward, so determined and so clear, ‘I’ve got this. I’m handling it. I’m navigating it. I’m good.’ I saw this picture and it’s already me. It’s 3-year-old Olivia Benson. She’s not f—king around”, Hargitay stated.
‘My Mom Jane’s streaming premiere: June 27 on HBO Max.
