The collaboration between DiCaprio and Eastwood should have attracted attention to the project, but the opposite happened.

Leonardo DiCaprio's career includes films that have become cultural milestones: Titanic, Inception, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Shutter Island. However, some of his movies have remained in the shadows, including J. Edgar, a biopic directed by Clint Eastwood.

DiCaprio, passionate about winning an Oscar, engaged in outright Oscar-baiting and while the film wasn't a flop, it was overlooked.

What Is 'J. Edgar' About?

Throughout his life, John Edgar Hoover rose to great heights of power, becoming the most powerful man in America. As the director of the FBI, he stopped at nothing to protect his country.

Throughout eight presidential administrations and three wars, he fought against real and imagined threats, often breaking the rules to keep his fellow citizens safe. He was both ruthless and heroic, and the world's admiration was his most coveted reward.

The movie explores Hoover's private and public life, including his relationships with his mother, his devoted secretary, and his deputy, Clyde.

'J. Edgar' Was a Run-of-the-Mill Movie for Both Leonardo DiCaprio And Clint Eastwood

J. Edgar was neither a breakthrough nor a failure – it simply happened. For Clint Eastwood, who had already directed Million Dollar Baby, Gran Torino, and Unforgiven, it was a run-of-the-mill project – not his worst, but not his best, either.

For DiCaprio, who had already shone in The Aviator and Titanic, the role of Hoover was another step toward the coveted Oscar, which he would receive four years later for The Revenant.

In this film, however, DiCaprio delivers one of the most challenging performances of his career – he plays Hoover at various ages, from a young, ambitious bureaucrat to a decrepit old man and does so with such conviction that you forget about the makeup.

Eastwood sticks to the minimalistic plan: he doesn't delve into conspiracy theories or pin more blame on Hoover than is necessary, he simply captures Hoover's nervous tics, slips of the tongue, and growing melancholy.

If you enjoy biopics and are interested in complex historical figures, J. Edgar is worth your attention, especially if you're ready to see DiCaprio in one of his most controversial roles. While it's not a perfect film, it showcases DiCaprio's talent, even in projects that weren't hits.
