The 2002 movie’s live-action remake was a bit of disappointment despite hitting the $1 billion mark, but it seems like the right person will be there for the upcoming sequel after all.
Whether it was for Snow White’s failed remake or yet another wave of 2000s nostalgia, Lilo & Stitch’s live-action movie was meant to be a massive hit anyway, but now some think its sequel might actually go for bigger heights — and better quality.
Based on the 2002 animated film of the same name, Lilo & Stitch followed pretty much the same storyline, though quickly went down the drain by altering several major details of the original plot.
Still, nothing went in Lilo & Stitch’s way when it came to an already confirmed sequel — which, however, will have a different and very promising writer.
‘Lilo & Stitch’ Fans Cheer as Chris Sanders Joins to Co-Write the Sequel
The animator is mostly known as the voice of Stitch, so no wonder the team is about to bring him on board to co-write the script for the future sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, so far Sanders is set to be the sequel’s writer only without directing the feature, since he’s now busy developing a sequel for his other hit animation movie, last year’s Wild Robot.
The news came sometime after Lilo & Stitch’s continuation was confirmed, though this time fans seem to be much more reassured about the upcoming sequel’s success.
“That's great. Hope he writes Nani back home somehow, it just wouldn't be the same to have a whole movie with her not there. Wonder if he'll do some kind of adaptation of the series or something completely new”, Redditor RunwayGutModel9000 commented on the matter in a thread.
“What’s actually exciting to me is that Chris Sanders has never actually written a sequel to Lilo & Stitch. Despite still being involved in the production of sequel shows and direct to dvd movies as the voice for Stitch”, Snoo_83425 added.
Fans Predict a Major Character’s Return in ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Sequel
While so far it’s not clear what story the future movie will be based on, considering that there are still one more animated movie and two seasons of an entire show to choose from, it seems like Lilo & Stitch’s already have their top choices prepared.
“This seems like a no-brainer, especially because they can introduce Angel (the pink Stitch from the TV show) and make a s–tload of money off merchandise”, MuptonBossman suggested in a different thread.
“Angel and Gantu incoming. This will mean a larger budget hopefully. Would have loved to see more Stitch, there were lots of moments I forgot he was in the movie”, canchin commented.
Others, however, still seemed to be reeling from the disappointment of the first movie.
“Maybe in this one the sister will get a restraining order against Lilo. Ohana!” GoldenTriforceLink wrote sarcastically.
