The upcoming movie is so grand, but also so issue-packed.

Summary:

  • Jon Favreau’s The Lion King released back in 2019 was quick to catch everyone’s attention long before the start of its theatrical run, but eventually turned out a critical fiasco despite the box office raving success.
  • Though there were no real signs for some more installments of the franchise, The Lion King’s prequel is still coming to the theaters this year — and the movie’s first trailer proves that it may have to deal with a lot more issues than its predecessor.
  • The prequel’s creative team raises a lot of questions among fans who wonder whether the upcoming movie will become an even bigger failure.

It may be your first time hearing something like this, but here it is. It turns out that The Lion King’s modern adaptation released back in 2019 never disturbed the creators by its critical failure — quite the contrary, it seems to have become an even bigger incentive to come up with a prequel that this time will revolve around Simba’s father Mufasa.

Set to be released this December, the upcoming movie called Mufasa: The Lion King has just dropped its first trailer making so many things even more controversial now.

The Lion King, the first installment of the technologically advanced franchise based on the 1994 iconic animated film of the same name, was directed by the MCU ’s vet Jon Favreau and soon after the start of its production was proclaimed one of the most anticipated movies back in 2019. Despite all the buzz that surrounded The Lion King several months ahead of its theatrical release, Marvel’s director still didn’t make it to create a marvel himself.

With all the box office success sponsored by those numerous fans of the original cartoon who got tempted to see lifelike lion cutie pies on the big screens, the movie was totally smashed by critics and ended up with only 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Having garnered more than $1.5 billion in theaters, The Lion King nonetheless proved that the famous story may have been safer while kept in the cinema’s history, and no further installments were needed.

Why is Mufasa Already Problematic?

Now that the prequel, quietly elaborated with Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins directing, is officially making its way to the cinemas this year, it seems to be even grander than the first movie, but the point is that nobody really asked.

Yet it has some major figures involved like legendary Lin Manuel Miranda backing the movie’s soundtrack up, even Beyonce’s return to voicing Nala doesn’t spark any excitement. Some even were real quick to point to the movie’s silent support of nepotism as the upcoming prequel will feature Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter who is voicing the character called Kiara.

The overall image looks even sadder when remembering that Barry Jenkins never worked with anything Disney- related before focusing his entire career on movies about the Black community.

All that combined makes the upcoming prequel look even more terrifying than the original movie, depriving the fan-favorite story of all its magic that conquered everyone’s hearts back in the 1990s, but time will show if all these fears would become true.

Mufasa: The Lion King is set to be released in theaters on December 20.
