The star of Sheridan's spy thriller lobbied the writer's room of one to blow up her character's marriage. The renewal she's now campaigning for is the part that doesn't exist yet.

Let's deal with the renewal first, because it's why half of you are here: there isn't one. Paramount+ has not ordered Lioness season 4, it has said nothing since the finale, and at least one false renewal headline is already circulating — if you've seen one, that's it. The real news is what the finale did, and who made it do that.

The season 3 finale, "The Unravelling," landed on Paramount+ on September 20 with the show's cruelest ending so far: Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña) survives her abduction, comes home — and finds a "For Sale" sign on the lawn, a note, and an empty house. Neal has taken the kids and left. And in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Saldaña revealed that ending exists because she talked Sheridan into it.

Sheridan's instinct was that Joe and Neal's love could survive anything — the position the show had held for two seasons of near-misses. Saldaña disagreed, and kept calling him while he was writing the season to argue that a father whose children are now kidnapping collateral has every reason to walk:

"I don't know why he would stay."

She won. Which deserves a beat of appreciation, because Sheridan is the most famously solitary writer on television — no writers' room, scripts delivered whole, and a track record of co-stars learning not to ask (Pierce Brosnan's entire approach to Sheridan-adjacent showrunners is not talking to them). An actor cold-calling him into changing a season's emotional ending is rare enough to be the story.

The finale she changed, and the one she didn't

The empty house was only half the cliffhanger. The other half: the person behind Joe's abduction is Aaliyah Amrohi (Stephanie Nur), unseen since season 1, daughter of the terrorist financier Joe's team destroyed — and the finale ends with her ordering a third kidnapping attempt. Along the way, the CIA quietly murders the asset Oleksandra Balakin under cover of "relocation," and Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman) is visibly done with Joe working in the field.

Two open storylines, in other words, from the man whose cast knows his rules. Laysla De Oliveira put the irony on record herself:

"Talking to Taylor, he's like, 'I never end on cliffhangers.'"

He ended on two.

The season 4 evidence file

No renewal, then — but the silence comes with a pile of circumstantial evidence worth more than most announcements:

  • The pattern: season 2 was ordered about eight months after season 1 ended; season 3 came on October 1, 2025, ten months after season 2's finale. Silence in October 2026 is right on schedule, not a warning sign.
  • The hire: writer Michael Idov announced in August that he'd joined Lioness as a writer and supervising producer — while season 3 was already airing, which only makes sense if something after season 3 is being built.
  • The cast: De Oliveira told ScreenRant flatly, "We're going to get a Season 4", and Jill Wagner said in August she expected one.
  • The complication: Saldaña's original deal reportedly covered three seasons as star and executive producer. A fourth season means a new negotiation with one of the busiest actors alive.

That last bullet reframes the EW interview. Saldaña isn't just explaining the finale — she's publicly sketching season 4, down to hoping the show explores Joe and Neal's bond after the separation, comparing the couple to birds that mate for life. An actor whose contract just expired, pitching storylines for the unordered next season, is telling you which way she's leaning without a press release.

Sheridan's deal with Paramount runs through 2028 before his Universal move. Every unrenewed Sheridan show is now negotiating against that clock.
