Lioness season 3 finale ending explained: Aaliyah Amrohi is back as the villain nobody clocked
Raise your hand if you spent eight episodes of Lioness season 3 confidently yelling "it's Russia" at your TV. Now keep it raised if you pivoted to "okay, fine, it's Ukraine" somewhere around episode five. Congratulations, you played yourself, and so did the CIA.
Because the finale, "The Unraveling," waited until its literal last scene to show us who actually paid to have Joe McNamara snatched, and it's a face we haven't seen since season 1: Aaliyah Amrohi.
The reveal, for those who blacked out
The finale spends most of its runtime on the fallout of Joe's worst impulse: ordering her team to engage Renat and lobbyist Dimitri Sokolov in a Washington restaurant, a revenge-brained call that leaves two of Kyle's guys and one very unlucky African diplomat dead. Then, in the closing minutes, the show cuts to a woman in Doha, the season 1 musical theme kicks in like a fire alarm, and there she is.
Aaliyah — whose oil-money family Cruz infiltrated back in season 1, and whose father and fiancé were killed at her own wedding in Mallorca as a result — hired the Iran-backed KSS to kidnap Joe. The whole "which country did this" shell game was the point: enough Russian, Ukrainian and Iranian fingerprints to keep everyone chasing geopolitics while one extremely rich, extremely wronged woman ran a three-season grudge.
"It always comes at the cost of putting herself in danger, and now danger has knocked on our door, unfortunately," Zoe Saldaña said of Joe back when the season premiered — describing the kidnapping with what we can now appreciate as criminal levels of understatement.
Nobody clocked her (okay, some of you clocked her)
To be fair to the internet, the "Bring Aaliyah Back" faction has existed since 2023, and they are insufferable now, as is their right. One fan put it best: "Aaliyah is no longer that bubbly girl. Her demeanor is full of hatred." Growth!
Meanwhile Joe gets the full Sheridan special:
- Her house is for sale and Neal has taken the kids, because six days in captivity apparently reads as "work obsession" on a marriage ledger.
- The one thing that would've made her turn down the next suicidal assignment — a family to come home to — is gone. Convenient for Aaliyah. Devastating for us.
- Kyle is holding the bag for the restaurant bloodbath, and Oleksandra's body is a loose end with "congressional hearing" written all over it.

Season 4 is now teed up as Aaliyah versus Cruz versus Joe, a triangle of women who have all ruined each other's lives at least once. Appointment television. Bring the theme music.
