Sometimes it’s just not about good reviews.

With several highly anticipated movies flooding theaters worldwide at the same time, it’s not really surprising that some of them end up lost in the background watching the others get all that success.

However, studios might have just found a way to deal with it, transferring their underperforming flicks to streaming platforms even before a movie passes at least a month in theaters; more recently, horror movies were the ones to follow this pretty discouraging trend.

An early digital release was the case for the Julia Garner-led Wolf Man that arrived on streaming less than 3 weeks after hitting cinema halls, and now another long-awaited horror film is confirmed to be doing pretty much the same.

Companion Is Already Available for Watching at Home

Starring Sophie Thatcher, who before that appeared in one of the leading roles in Heretic with Hugh Grant, Companion was released in theaters on January 31. Surprisingly, though, it can already be found on digital platforms as, according to World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy, Warner Bros. had confirmed February 18 as the streaming release date for the movie.

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion follows Iris and Josh, a couple who decide to spend a weekend out of town with their friends, despite Iris’ mixed feelings about Sergey, her friend’s millionaire boyfriend and the owner of the mansion they’re going to stay in.

The idyllic getaway turns into Iris’ worst nightmare when Sergey tries to harass her, and she, in an attempt to defend herself, is left with no other choice but to kill him. Everyone’s reaction to the tragedy is weird, and only then Iris realizes that she’s not actually human, but a companion android who must obey everything her owner says.

Despite Early Digital Release, Companion Is Still a Box Office Success

Warner Bros.’s decision seems an even weirder outcome as, according to the most recent data from The Numbers, Companion actually had stunning success at the box office, earning around $33 million against the initial budget of $10 million.

However, media outlets have been long predicting a major failure for the movie in case it doesn’t reach the $40 million mark, which, considering Companion’s relatively short run in theaters, is a pretty likely result to expect after all.

Still, as Ruimy suggests, the company isn’t eager to check whether it’s worth risking and now has high hopes for the movie’s early digital release that might save it from becoming a flop.
