Maya buries a husband, crosses four countries and two lovers — and the movie's biggest fake-out is saved for the man who keeps not getting the girl. Ending spoilers below, after the cast.

Love of Your Life landed on Prime Video on October 14, a week after its October 7 theatrical release and a month after its Toronto premiere). It's directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison from a Julia Cox script that Amazon MGM bought for a reported $2 million in October 2024, with Ryan Gosling producing. Runtime is a tight 106 minutes.

The cast, and who everyone is to Maya:

  • Margaret Qualley — Maya, a Boston ER nurse whose life splits into before and after.
  • Gabriel Basso — Charlie, the husband. His asthma turns the pandemic into a death sentence, and his loss is the engine of everything that follows.
  • Aaron Pierre — Felix, the lover Maya finds in Portugal and leaves the moment it gets serious.
  • Patrick Schwarzenegger — Jason, Charlie's friend and Maya's old college almost-boyfriend, who keeps reappearing at every stage of her life.
  • Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrance, Corey Johnson round out the cast; Keener's character gets the movie's thesis line.

Morrison has asked audiences to go in blind, telling Spectrum News:

"I actually do believe there is something special about not seeing anything coming and just feeling all the feels."

Consider that your cue: everything below this line is the ending.

The ending, explained (full spoilers)

Charlie dies of COVID, his mother Ruth blames Maya, and Maya runs — telehealth work, Portugal, London, Luxembourg, drinking, strangers. Felix is the one who gets closest, and she leaves him for exactly that reason; when she comes back, he has moved on.

Jason's arc is the long game the title of this article promises. He's at the wedding, he's in London — where Maya rejects him and he confronts her about disappearing — and he's still there years later when she calls from New Orleans and he forgives her. They settle back into friendship, and his last big line is asking whether it'll be another five to ten years before he sees her again. She promises him Thanksgiving.

Then comes the airport sequence, built like the finale of every romance you've ever seen: Maya runs, and the movie lets you believe it's to Jason. It isn't. She goes to Ruth, the two women reconcile, Ruth tells her to keep living and loving her life — and the film closes with Maya listening to a tape Charlie left her.

Maya's last promise to Jason is Thanksgiving. The person she runs through the airport for is Charlie's mother.

So no, Maya doesn't end up with Jason, and she doesn't end up with Felix. Qualley's own summary of the movie, quoting Keener's character, is the closest thing to an answer the film offers: "You have to learn to fall in love with your own life no matter what it throws at you."
