Chris grapples with the terrifying prospect of growing up, yet he always faces his fears head on. He asks out a girl he likes and tries to win over a group of older skaters. While both attempts end in failure, every mistake is a step towards maturity.

Chris is gripped by a dread of growing up in the moments between hanging out with friends, yet he manages to overcome it. Rather than posing as a profound social observer, the director simply tells a story set against a masterfully crafted backdrop.

While the most obvious comparisons are to Mid90s and Stand by Me, Didi distinguishes itself through its sparkling energy and humour.

Wang tells a story that anyone who has ever been a teenager can relate to. Effective storytelling, humour, floppy disks and skateboarding come together to create a film that practically glows with energy.

The director described his movie as Stand by Me for Gen Z, and this is the perfect description. As in the Stephen King classic, there are no earth-shattering events here, only the small victories and defeats that shape character.
