Maisie Williams Finally Weighs in on the 'Game of Thrones' Spinoff About Arya Rumors: "I Was Like, Huh?"
The GoT universe continues to grow, and it seems HBO has no intention of stopping.
Since Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, the studio has sought new ways to bring viewers back to Westeros. One of the most intriguing rumors concerns a potential spinoff centered on Arya Stark's adventures.
This concept logically follows from the original show's finale, in which the young Stark sailed west of Westeros to explore uncharted lands.
Maisie Williams Learned About the Plans for an Arya Stark Spinoff From the Media – and Was Surprised
However, Maisie Williams, the actress who played Arya, learned of these plans through the news and was just as surprised as the fans.
In an interview with The Guardian, Williams admitted that she had not received an official offer and was unsure how she would react to a potential return to the role:
“I saw that, too! I was like, huh?”
When asked if she would like to reprise her role as Arya, Williams responded cautiously:
“I don't know, really. She would have to be developed in some way because I feel like I've changed so much, and I feel like what people loved about Arya is that she was always a child doing things that were quite grownup.”
Rumors about the spinoff first surfaced in January 2026. At the time, it was reported that HBO was considering a project centered on Arya's adventures in Essos. Quoc Dang Tran, known for his work on Drops of God, was entrusted with the script.
However, the project never received official confirmation. The studio had originally planned a series starring Kit Harington as Jon Snow, but the idea was deemed unviable and shelved. This led to the subsequent proposal to bring back Arya.
What Other Game of Thrones Spinoffs Should We Wait for?
Although the future of the Arya project is uncertain, fans of GoT have other confirmed projects to look forward to, all of which are at various stages of production.
One of the most highly anticipated projects is Ten Thousand Ships – a story about the legendary Queen Nymeria, set a thousand years before the events of the original show. The project has weathered several team changes and a cancellation, but HBO later revived it and gave Eboni Booth the pilot.
Another project is The Golden Empire, a potential animated series set in the realm of Yi Ti in eastern Essos. George R.R. Martin confirmed its development in 2022.
The most unexpected turn of events was the decision to bring the story of Aegon the Conqueror to the big screen. Initially, Matthew Tomlin was working on the script, but after Warner Bros. shifted the format from a series to a feature film, Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards and co-writer of Andor, took over the project.
The movie is scheduled for release after 2027.
Finally, Nine Voyages was originally conceived as a live-action series about Corlys Velaryon. However, due to the scope of the story, the decision was made to produce it as an animated show. Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Samurai Jack and Primal, is leading production.
