Dave Filoni will now have a much greater influence on the direction of the franchise, causing polarizing reactions from fans.

Summary:

  • Many fans believe that the Star Wars franchise is in steady decline due to questionable creative decisions made in recent years
  • Dave Filoni, one of the most recognizable names in the franchise today, will now have more influence over the direction of Star Wars
  • The news has divided fans, with some seeing it as a way to save the franchise and others calling it a disaster

Many of the creative decisions made in the Star Wars franchise after it was acquired by Disney have caused massive outrage among fans.

The sequel trilogy became infamous for how controversial it was, Solo: A Star Wars Story turned out to be quite underwhelming, and even some of the TV shows that were initially well-received ended up being panned by some fans.

The Mandalorian TV series, which was hailed as the savior of Star Wars, got a rather disappointing third season, with those who actually loved it being in the minority, while The Book of Boba Fett and especially Obi-Wan Kenobi were decimated by outraged fans.

Claims that the company was destroying their beloved universe became common, with some fans even accusing Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy of mishandling the franchise and calling for her to be fired.

Dave Filoni Just Got A New Position At Lucasfilm

But a new update on the franchise promises that the future of Star Wars is now much brighter (or much darker, depending on your point of view).

Dave Filoni, known for working on The Clone Wars TV series and creating shows like Star Wars Rebels, The Bad Batch and Ahsoka, has now been given a new position at Lucasfilm, as in addition to being an executive vice president, he is now also the chief creative officer.

The filmmaker revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that this will allow him to have more control over the direction of the franchise, as he will now be involved in virtually every project from the earliest stages.

However, he clarified that he doesn't tell people what to do, but rather advises them on how to best tell the stories they want to tell.

Fans Have Drastically Different Reactions To The News

This new turn of events seems to have caused quite polarizing reactions from the fanbase.

Some fans see this as a great move and a long overdue turn for the better, hoping that the filmmaker's influence will help the franchise get back on track.

After all, the Star Wars animated shows and the live-action Ahsoka TV series he was involved with received a pretty warm reception from fans, unlike some of the other aforementioned projects.

But not everyone is as optimistic, as a significant number of other fans see this as a disaster and declare that they have given up all hope for the franchise.

The reason for this is that some of the filmmaker's creative decisions and approaches have caused backlash from some fans in the past, such as an over-reliance on fan service, like including familiar characters in his projects regardless of whether they fit or not.

It should also be noted that not all of his projects were successful, the most obvious example being the Star Wars Resistance (not to be confused with Rebels) animated TV series, which ended up being pretty awful.

Now that his influence is even greater, it is clear that many future Star Wars projects may resemble those created directly by Filoni, which is definitely not to the taste of all fans.

But, personal preferences aside, only time will tell if this change is for the better or for the worse.
