Benedict Cumberbatch’s story as the famous detective might not be over yet.

Summary:

  • BBC’s Sherlock has gained wide popularity over the course of four seasons the last of which was released back in 2017
  • Since then, the show has never been prolonged or canceled — and now one of the creators has spoken out about the series’ possible revival.
  • Mark Gatiss, the creator who also got to portray Sherlock’s brother Mycroft in the show, admitted there were still some obstacles on the way to Sherlock’s story expansion.

Despite Gatiss’ revelations, there’s nothing yet to say about Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman who portrayed the main characters in the show.

One of the most successful shows of British television, Mark Gatiss and Stephen Moffat’s Sherlock had a long run of seven years and four seasons that concluded quite ambiguously back in 2017.

The crime drama series’ finale initially left a weird aftertaste among the viewers who never got to have it clear whether the show was over or not — but, given that nobody had seen any faint effort towards yet another season from the crew’s part, it all became evident.

Now that Sherlock has been gone for good for seven more years, one of the show’s creators Mark Gatiss suddenly brought it all up again and addressed the chances of the fan-favorite series to get some kind of extension — and his answer is what will fill the fans across the world with a bittersweet feeling.

While talking to Deadline, Gatiss revealed that the creators’ idea about giving Sherlock one more movie instead of another season had in fact always been there and the lack of plot twists wasn’t the main problem here.

As the producer said, getting everyone back together on set is what really needs a significant effort and asking Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman about it is its most challenging part.

It isn’t the first time when Mark Gatiss reflects on Sherlock’s possible revival — back in 2023 he also mentioned that turning the series into one more film would be “the natural thing to do”, but there’s still fans’ sincere desire that would be prevailing.

Now everything seems to be in favor of Sherlock’s story being adapted for yet another movie (apart from the four seasons, Sherlock also includes an-hour-and-a-half-long film The Abominable Bride with the main characters being brought to Victorian England of 1895).

With Mark Gatiss being a whole enthusiast about the show’s possible return while Cumberbatch and Freeman don’t seem to be very busy with other projects, the chances to see the famous detective come back to the screen are quite high.

However, there’s still no certainty in the actors’ wish which might turn out in a completely different way – by putting the story to its definite end.
