Mark's Odd Moves in Severance S2 Sparked Wild Theories, But One Fan Figured It Out
Mark is behaving in such a strange way for a reason.
Everyone who watched the first episode of Severance season 2 definitely noticed one detail – Mark's unusual behavior. First, the process of transitioning from outie to innie seemed to become more difficult for him – and more uncomfortable with each elevator ride.
Second, at the very beginning of the episode, during that brilliant scene where Mark is running around the severed floor, he sees a mysterious man behind him.
What does all this mean? A Reddit user offered an excellent theory that explains this behavior.
We Learned About the Reintegration Procedure in Season 1
In the first season, we see Mark being promoted to the position of head of the Macrodata Refinement division. The employee who held this position before the main character, Petey, suddenly left his post, and the company's management decided that Scout's appointment would be the perfect option.
Outside of the office, the man's second personality meets a mysterious person who claims to be Mark's ex-colleague.
Meanwhile, Mark's outie decides to take Petey into his home. The former colleague tells the main character that he was able to undergo the reintegration procedure with the help of mysterious benefactors.
However, Mark does not get anything else from his new/old acquaintance, because he recognizes Cobel and runs away, after which he experiences hallucinations and dies.
Mark Underwent a Reintegration Procedure After the Events of the Season 1 Finale
The theory is that Mark went through a reintegration process before returning to Lumon, and it makes sense. According to fans, Mark couldn't just go back to the office without some kind of plan that included not only exposing Lumon, but something even more important – finding out what happened to his wife.
As viewers will recall, Petey was also seeing hallucinations, and that was because of the reintegration process. As it was later revealed, Petey did not follow the "rehabilitation process" and that is why he felt so bad.
Fans assume that in order to successfully complete the reintegration process, you must continue to go to the office so that the separated parts of your consciousness gradually merge into one.
Devon & Ricken Know about Reintegration
It's also possible that Mark's family – his sister Devon and her husband Ricken – are covering for him. In the first episode of Season 2, we were shown a newspaper article that included a quote from Ricken speaking favorably of Lumon. This is probably a distraction to convince the company of Mark's and his family's loyalty.
Still, we need time to see if this theory is at least remotely correct. Next episode of Severance season 2 will premiere on Apple TV this Friday, January 24.
