Not, not because of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, although we get it.

Netflix 's One Piece has plenty of characters for one to simp over, but it's safe to say that Buggy the clown pirate instantly had everyone crushing on him — even despite his questionable jokes.

Buggy may seem very familiar to everyone who considers themselves a superhero movies fan, not least because of Joker — an iconic DC villain and Batman 's longtime antagonist.

However, you need to be a true Marvel fan to realize that Jeff Ward, the actor who portrayed Buggy in Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece, is actually no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Pretty unrecognizable in all that clown make-up, Ward doesn't immediately strike you as Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Agent Deke Shaw, right? A recurring guest star in season 5, Ward was promoted to series regular in season 6.

It's interesting that originally, he received the role of Virgil, but table reads proved he was a perfect Deke — and luckily for the actor, Agent Shaw had not yet been cast at the time.

We wouldn't be too surprised if people start fancasting Ward for DC's new Joker after his immaculate performance in One Piece, even though this would be just a tad bit predictable.

According to One Piece director Marc Jobst, Ward was absolutely incredible as the fearsome clown pirate. When we are introduced to Buggy's villainous circus in the second episode of the series, we understand that this is no joke and Ward's character actually means business.

"It was in equal measure terrifying as it was exciting. [...] You've got this phenomenal actor, Jeff Ward, who's playing Buggy, who comes and he just roars his way onto that stage and owns the floor of the circus," Jobst told RadioTimes.com.

You can stream One Piece season 1 on Netflix right now, or, if you feel a sudden urge to revisit Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you can go check it out on Netflix or Disney Plus.
