And the line still haunts him.

Summary:

  • Matthew McConaughey’s long-standing career has proven his status as one of the best actors in Hollywood over the course of several last decades.
  • But not many know that he owes his entire acting path to one particular scene in his debut film.
  • McConaughey’s first ever appearance on the screen was a 1993 movie one iconic line from which was entirely improvised.
  • As it turned out, the actor nailed that famous scene to the point that his phrase haunts him more than thirty years later.

Matthew McConaughey may be a very recognisable star now due to his breakout roles during a couple of last decades, but he actually had an iconic way to kick his career off more than thirty years ago.

Back in 1993, the young actor starred in a coming-of-age comedy Dazed and Confused — and though the movie eventually didn’t become a box office hit, it stayed in the fans’ hearts forever thanks to McConaughey’s improvised line.

During his recent interview with People, the actor reflected on the most iconic roles in his career — with one of them being the portrayal of David Wooderson from Dazed and Confused. The film became quite a literal golden ticket to the big cinema for McConaughey and to this day remains one of his finest works on the screen.

As the actor recalled, on that day he had come to the set earlier to do makeup and check the wardrobe when director Richard Linklater approached him asking if McConaughey’s character would be “interested in the redheaded intellectual girl in school” to which the actor replied that David Wooderson was into “all types of chicks”.

What followed next got to be a real challenge for McConaughey as the director had come up with a new scene that hadn’t been mentioned in the script and the actor had to park his car near the one where Cynthia Dunn, portrayed by Marissa Ribisi, was sitting and try to pick her up.

According to McConaughey, he got all nervous having no idea about what he was supposed to say, so he had to be quick to grasp something Wooderson-ish before driving closer to Cynthia’s car.

The moment he saw Marissa Ribisi after a short ‘Action!’ shout, he thought to himself “I got three out of four and I’m going to get the fourth… alright, alright, alright!” — and the last part of the phrase suddenly slipped out.

Thus, as the actor revealed, the three affirmations for his characters turned out to be the movie’s most hilarious and memorable moment.

What’s even more fascinating about the whole comic situation is that, before Dazed and Confused happened, McConaughey never even pondered over the actor’s career — but one improvised line made his performance stand out so much that the whole stunning success that followed after was like the whole sign from the universe.
